Young people ages 13 to 17 looking for leadership skills training and experience have a new opportunity in Dayton, the NextGen Leaders series presented by the City of Dayton Department of Recreation.
The Teen Recreation and Youth Sports Workforce Development Program is a 6-week, hands-on experience designed to provide experience and build skills in leadership, coaching, and recreation management. The program goes beyond the basics, giving participants tools to lead and opportunity to gain real-world experience in a professional environment.
Curriculum
- Weeks 1-2: Orientation, Workplace Foundations, and Recreation Operations.
- Weeks 3-4: Leadership, Communication, and Youth Sports Fundamentals.
- Weeks 5-6: Coaching Principles, Positive Behavior Management, and Career Reflection.
Credentials
Participants successfully completing the program will earn a number of certifications and credentials that can carry weight in future job searches, including CPR/First Aid, Youth Mental Health First Aid, and National Alliance for Youth Sports coaching courses.
Essential details
- Dates/Times: June 1 to July 11, Tuesdays through Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- Experience: Includes selected Saturdays (June 6, 13, 20) and Friday, July 3, featuring live event support for Rec Hood Your Hood, Lights in Flight, and flag football.
- Cost: $60 for the full six-week program.
- Requirements: An interview and registration are required for participation.
