When will you be accepting applications?
We usually accept application once every two years. Currently we maintain a database of those who are interested in a career with us. We use this database to contact those individuals when the application period begins. Sign up for our emails If you would like to be included in these updates.

What if I am under the age of 18?
Exploring is a worksite-based program that's part of Learning for Life's career education program for young men and women who are 14 (and have completed the eighth grade) through 20 years old. Check out our
Explorer Program.

Where can I get an application?
Applications are only available during the application period. At that time, applications will be available online at Online Employment Center. You will need an email account prior to submitting your application.

When is the exam date?
The next exam is tentatively scheduled for some time in April 2016.
5.
How long does it take to find out where I have placed on the Firefighter Recruit eligible list?
It usually takes between 4 - 6 weeks to receive your results. The Civil Service Board will send you a letter or email stating what your score was on the test and where you placed on the list.

Is there a study guide available for the exam?
A study guide will not be made available. No prior knowledge of firefighting is necessary to pass the test.
7.
How are applicants ranked on the eligible list?
You are ranked on the list by your written test score.
8.
If there is a tie on the exam, how is ranking affected on the eligible list?
All ties are broken by random selection method.
9.
Are there additional points given for special skills?
There are no additional points given for special skills.
10.
Will there be any additional points awarded?
Currently, as stated in Civil Service Rules and Regulations, a person who prior to the date of examination has been honorably discharged from service with any branch of the United States military is entitled to have five (5) preference points added to that person’s passing grade; or a person who prior to the date of examination is employed by the City and has satisfactorily completed six (6) or more months of full-time employment with the City, as documented by City performance evaluations, is entitled to have five (5) preference points added to that person’s passing grade. Five (5) preference points are the maximum preference points that a person may receive.

Will there be any practice sessions available for the physical agility test?
There will be orientation and practice sessions available prior to the actual test date.
12.
How can I prepare for the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)?

13.
Is there an age requirement?
If your 16th birthday is on or before the written test date, you may submit an application. However, you must be between 18 and 35 years old to apply. No person who will be 36 or older at the completion of the Firefighter Recruit Training Academy class shall receive an original appointment to the position of Firefighter Recruit.
14.
What is the academy start date?
That will be determined after the test is given.
15.
How many recruits will be hired?
The number of recruits will be based on the need within the department.
16.
If I am called for active duty or have a medical problem, can I reserve my place on the list?
Yes. Once on the eligibility list, you can obtain a military or medical waiver from the Civil Service Board.
17.
What are minimum requirements to apply?
You must be 16 years old on or before the scheduled test date and not over 40 years old (unless you're a previous firefighter). You must have a high school diploma or GED.
18.
Is an Ohio driver's license required to apply?
No; however, a valid driver's license is required at time of appointment.
19.
Do you have to be a citizen of the United States to apply?
No; however, you must have proof of being able to have a job in the United States.
20.
Is there a vision standard?
Yes - Vision without correction must be a minimum of 20/100 in each eye. Corrected, vision must be a minimum of 20/40 or better in each eye. You must not be color-blind.
21.
Do I have to live in the city of Dayton?
No, there is no residency requirement.
22.
Do I need any previous training?
No previous training is necessary. The Dayton Fire Department provides all the necessary training when you are hired.
23.
How long does the academy last and what are the hours?
The fire recruit academy lasts approximately six months. You will be attending classes Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
24.
