The Program
The City of Dayton’s intern program was created to provide opportunities for college students to gain first-hand knowledge and understanding of governmental processes through pre-professional work experiences in various occupational fields. 

As part of the regional 20 by 20 Initiative, the City of Dayton posts and hires all internship positions through the Southwest Ohio Council for Higher Education.  Positions are posted in March with the goal of interviewing and hiring students before they leave for the summer.

Program Structure
Students are hired for one-year positions which begin the first week in September.  The position is 28 weeks with an optional 12 week summer session.  Interns are expected to work 15-20 hours per week during the school year and up to 40 hours during the summer unless otherwise specified. 

Eligibility
Both undergraduate and graduate students are welcome to apply, but must be enrolled in their program full-time.

Student Compensation
All City of Dayton interns are compensated at a rate of $10.00 per hour regardless of year or major.  For-credit internships are not offered at this time.

How to Apply
All students are hired through the Southwest Ohio Council for Higher Education’s (SOCHE) SOCHEIntern program.   Students should visit www.socheintern.org, to create a student profile.  Once a profile has been created, students can select the internships to which they would like to apply.

Fall 2013 City of Dayton Internships
(Begins September 2013)

Business Management Intern- Dept. of Aviation
Student will work with the Operations Supervisors to assist with various projects including but not limited to; data collection, sustainability, safety management systems, runway inspections, maintenance requests, and regulatory reviews. 
Requested Majors:  Business, Marketing, Communications, Political Science, Urban Affairs or similar preferred, all majors accepted. 

Business Management Intern- Dept. of Recreation
Student will work with the Business Manager and department leadership to assist with various projects including budget management, data collection and marketing.  
Requested Majors:  Business, Marketing, Communications, Political Science, Urban Affairs or similar preferred, all majors accepted.

Economic Development Intern- Office of Economic Dev.
This position will provide critical research and communications support, including the development of research material, key messages, and web-based content. 
Requested Majors:  Economic Development, Business, Political Science, Urban Affairs or similar preferred, all majors accepted.

Energy Management Intern- Office of Economic Development
This position will support City efforts to improve energy efficiency and reduce energy consumption and costs.  The student will assist in energy audits, make recommendations for improvements, and provide employee and public education. 
Requested Majors:  Business, Environmental Engineering, Political Science, Urban Affairs or similar preferred, all majors accepted. 

Engineering/Environmental Intern- Dept. of Aviation
Student will work with the engineering staff to assist in the management of various Airport construction projects, as well as assisting with Environmental programs including storm water and wastewater discharge compliance, sustainability, energy conservation, and recycling.  
Requested Majors:  Engineering, Science or similar preferred, all majors accepted. 

Finance Intern- Dept. of Finance
Student will provide accounting, logistical, and team support in the areas of financial analysis, income tax and tax collections. 
Requested Majors:  Business, Accounting, Finance, Political Science, Urban Affairs or similar preferred, all majors accepted.

Local Government Intern- Dept. of Public Works
Student will work on assignments focused on research and development of direct municipal services including streets, community beautification, and waste collection.   
Requested Majors:  Political Science, Urban Affairs or similar preferred, all majors accepted.

Marketing Intern- Dept. of Public Works
This position will support the development and implementation of an existing marketing campaign for a municipal recycling program.   
Requested Majors:  Marketing, Communications, Business, Political Science, Urban Affairs or similar preferred, all majors accepted.

Marketing and Business Development Intern- Dayton Convention Center
Student will work with staff to develop and foster business relationships, develop marketing materials, and assist with Convention Center events.  
Requested Majors:  Marketing, Business, Political Science, or similar preferred, all majors accepted.

Marketing & Communications Intern- Dept. of Aviation
Student will work with staff to create and market the expansion of an existing program. This position will also be involved in helping to develop and organize special events for the airport. 
Requested Majors: Marketing, Communications, Business, Political Science, Urban Affairs, or similar preferred, all majors accepted.

Planning and Community Development Intern- Department of Planning and Community Development
Student assignments will be focused on research and development of municipal services related to housing and urban development, homelessness, and community planning. 
Requested Majors:  Urban Planning, Political Science, Urban Affairs or similar preferred, all majors accepted.

Public Safety Business Management Intern- Dept. of Fire
Student will assist with programs and processes, including targeted public education, projects and activities for residential and commercial fire safety and prevention, and data collection and analysis. 
Requested Majors:  Business, Political Science, Urban Affairs, Criminal Justice or similar preferred, all majors accepted.

Public Safety Strategic Programs Intern- Dept. of Fire
Under direction, student will prepare, revise, and implement plans and reports; develop new policies and procedures; draft guidance material for response personnel; and support contingency planning activities at the City and regional level. 
Requested Majors:  Marketing, Communications, Business, Public Health, Political Science, Urban Affairs, Criminal Justice or similar preferred, all majors accepted.

Water Engineering Intern- Dept. of Water
Student will work with Water Engineering staff to assist in the development and design of infrastructure improvement projects, as well as assisting with programs including storm water and wastewater compliance and sustainability. 
Requested Majors:  Civil, Environmental, or Mechanical Engineering Majors preferred, all majors accepted.

Water Utility and Field Operations Intern- Dept. of Water
Student will assist in developing recommendations for long and short term projects in areas such as inventory management and control, communications strategies, and electronic record keeping and databases.  
Requested Majors:  Business, Engineering, Political Science, Urban Affairs or similar preferred, All majors accepted.
