The Program

The City of Dayton’s intern program was created to provide opportunities for college students to gain first-hand knowledge and understanding of governmental processes through pre-professional work experiences in various occupational fields. 

As part of the regional 20 by 20 Initiative, the City of Dayton posts and hires all internship positions through the Southwest Ohio Council for Higher Education.  Positions are posted in March with the goal of interviewing and hiring students before they leave for the summer.

Program Structure 
Students are hired for one-year positions which begin the first week in September.  The position is 28 weeks with an optional 12 week summer session.  Interns are expected to work 15-20 hours per week during the school year and up to 40 hours during the summer unless otherwise specified.  

Eligibility
Both undergraduate and graduate students are welcome to apply, but must be enrolled in their program full-time.

Student Compensation
All City of Dayton interns are compensated at a rate of $10.00 per hour regardless of year or major.  For-credit internships are not offered at this time.

How to Apply
All students are hired through the Southwest Ohio Council for Higher Education’s (SOCHE) SOCHEIntern program.   Students should visit www.socheintern.org, to create a student profile.  Once a profile has been created, students can select the internships to which they would like to apply. 

Fall 2014 City of Dayton Internships
(Begins September 2014)

Business/Finance

Finance Intern- Department of Finance
Student will provide accounting, logistical, and team support in the areas of financial analysis, income tax and tax collections.  Requested Majors:  Business, Accounting, Finance, Political Science, Urban Affairs or similar preferred, all majors accepted. 

Business Management Intern- Dayton International Airport
Students will work with the Operations Supervisors to assist with various projects including but not limited to; data collection, sustainability, safety management systems, runway inspections, maintenance requests, and regulatory reviews.  Requested Majors:  Business, Marketing, Communications, Political Science, Urban Affairs or similar preferred, all majors accepted. 

Economic Development Intern- Office of Economic Development
This position will provide critical research and communications support, including the development of research material, key messages, and web-based content.  Requested Majors:  Economic Development, Business, Political Science, Urban Affairs or similar preferred, all majors accepted.

Public Safety Business Management Intern- Fire Department
Under direction, student will prepare, revise, and implement plans and reports; develop new policies and procedures; draft guidance material for response personnel; and support contingency planning activities at the City and regional level.  Requested Majors:  Marketing, Communications, Business, Public Health, Political Science, Urban Affairs, Criminal Justice or similar preferred, all majors accepted. 

Public Safety Business Management Intern- Fire Department
Under direction, student will intern to assist with programs and processes, including targeted public education, projects and activities for residential and commercial fire safety and prevention, and data collection and analysis.  Requested Majors:  Marketing, Communications, Business, Public Health, Political Science, Urban Affairs, Criminal Justice or similar preferred, all majors accepted. 

Engineering

Water Engineering Intern- Department of Water
Students will work with leadership and professional staff to gain firsthand knowledge and understanding of the Professional Engineer’s role regarding water, wastewater, and storm water utilities within a governmental setting. Requested Majors:  Civil, Environmental, or Mechanical Engineering Majors preferred, all majors accepted.

Engineering/Environmental Intern- Dayton International Airport
Students will work with the engineering staff to assist in the management of various Airport construction projects, as well as assisting with Environmental programs including storm water and wastewater discharge compliance, sustainability, energy conservation, and recycling.   Requested Majors:  Engineering, Science or similar preferred, all majors accepted. 

Marketing

Marketing and Business Development Intern- Dayton Convention Center
Student will work with staff to develop and foster business relationships, develop marketing materials, and assist with Convention Center events. Requested Majors:  Marketing, Business, Political Science or similar preferred, all majors accepted. 

Marketing Intern- Department of Public Works
This position will support the development of a marketing campaign for a municipal recycling program.  Requested Majors:  Marketing, Communications, Business, Political Science, Urban Affairs or similar preferred, all majors accepted. 

Marketing Intern- Department of Water
Student will work closely with the Department's Marketing Representative and Environmental Management Division staff to implement the department's strategic marketing initiatives.  Requested Majors:  Marketing, Communications, Business, Political Science, Urban Affairs or similar preferred, all majors accepted.

Marketing and Communications Intern- Dayton International Airport
This position will support the development of a marketing campaign for the Dayton International Airport as it relates to the parking program, recycling, and general airport advertising.  Requested Majors:  Marketing, Communications, Business, Political Science, Urban Affairs or similar preferred, all majors accepted.

Computer Science

Computer Technology Intern- Department of Finance
This position will support the development of a Finance Department software, including SQL programs and Oracle development.  Requested Majors:  Computer Science, Business, Accounting, Finance or similar preferred, all majors accepted. 

Technology Systems Engineer- Department of Central Services
Student will design, develop, implement, integrate and maintain computer data and technology systems; maintain liaison between users and the Department of Central Services; and provide users with management and operation information and systems required.  Requested Majors:  Computer Science or similar preferred, all majors accepted.

Information Applications Analyst- Department of Central Services
Student will implement, integrate and maintain computer data and technology systems; maintain liaison between users and the Department of Central Services; and provide users with management and operation information and systems required.  Requested Majors:  Computer Science or similar preferred, all majors accepted.

STEM

Water Analyst Intern- Department of Water
Students will work with leadership and professional staff to gain firsthand knowledge and understand of water, wastewater, and storm water utilities within a governmental setting.  Requested Majors:  Biology, Chemistry or similar preferred, all majors accepted. 

Water Utility and Field Operations Intern- Department of Water
The intern will assist with developing recommendations for long- and short-term projects in areas such as inventory management and control, communications strategies, and electronic record keeping and databases.  Requested Majors:  Business, Engineering, Political Science, Urban Affairs or similar preferred, all majors accepted.

Arborist and Horticulture Intern- Department of Public Works
This position will support the City's Forestry Department with the completion of a tree field audit.  Requested Majors:  Horticulture, Arboriculture, Forestry Management, Biology and similar preferred, all majors accepted.

Energy Management Intern- Department of Economic Development
The student will assist in energy audits, make recommendations for improvements, and provide employee and public education.  Requested Majors:  Business, Environmental Engineering, Political Science, Urban Affairs or similar preferred, all majors accepted.

Water Environmental Services Intern- Department of Water
Students will work with Environmental staff and the public to gain firsthand knowledge and understand of the importance of protecting our region's groundwater and storm water resources.  Requested Majors: Chemistry, Biology, Hydrology/Hydrogeology, Geology, Environmental Science, Engineering and other science fields.

Local Government

Local Government Intern- Department of Public Works
Student will work as part of the Public Works Department with work assignments focused on research and development of municipal services. Requested Majors:  Political Science, Urban Affairs or similar preferred, all majors accepted.

Planning and Community Development Intern- Department of Planning and Community Development
Intern work assignments will focus on improving the student's writing, research and analytic skills while exposing them to a variety of different projects within multiple departments. Requested Majors:  All majors accepted.
